Lake Town
In 1912, the thriving Black community of Oscarville, Georgia was destroyed in a racial massacre and its ruins submerged beneath what would become Lake Lanier. More than a century later, the lake is one of the Southeast's most popular tourist destinations. Nobody talks about what's underneath.
Sheriff Daniel Hale has spent years trying to make sense of his wife and daughters' disappearance on the lake. Investigative journalist Maya Torres arrives to map a pattern of vanishings that repeat, decade after decade, around the same holiday weekends. Historian Dr. Isaiah Brooks is already at the shoreline with sonar equipment, watching the water levels shift and the buried town below begin to move.
When a young man disappears during Memorial Day weekend, the search that follows pulls more than a body from the lake. Divers find him inside a stone room, still standing forty feet below the surface, part of a community that was never destroyed — only drowned.
As fireworks light the marina and the town celebrates above, Hale stares into the dark water and understands what the tourism economy has always required: that Oscarville stay buried.
It isn't.
